When your salary slip lands in your inbox every month, do you just check the "Net Pay" number and ignore everything else? If yes, you're likely overpaying taxes, missing HRA exemptions, and misunderstanding your EPF contributions.
This guide decodes every single component of an Indian salary slip โ with real numbers.
๐งพ 1. A Sample Indian Salary Slip (โน8 LPA CTC)
๐ฐ 2. The CTC Trap โ Why โน8 LPA โ โน66,667/Month In Hand
CTC (Cost to Company) includes things your employer pays towards you but that you never actually receive in your bank account:
| Component | Goes to You? | Amount (Example) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Salary | โ Yes | โน33,333/mo |
| HRA | โ Yes | โน16,667/mo |
| Special Allowance | โ Yes | โน10,000/mo |
| Medical / LTA | โ Yes | โน3,333/mo |
| Employer EPF | โ Goes to EPF account (locked) | โน4,000/mo |
| Gratuity Accrual | โ You get it only after 5 years | โน1,603/mo |
| Group Health Insurance | โ Paid to insurer directly | โน833/mo |
๐ 3. HRA โ India's Most Underutilized Tax Benefit
HRA (House Rent Allowance) is partially or fully tax-exempt if you pay rent. The exempt amount is the MINIMUM of:
- Actual HRA received from employer
- 50% of Basic Salary (metro cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) or 40% (non-metro)
- Actual rent paid โ 10% of Basic Salary
Note
Real Example: Rahul's Basic = โน33,333. HRA received = โน16,667. He pays โน15,000/month rent in Pune (non-metro).
- HRA received: โน16,667
- 40% of Basic: โน13,333
- Rent paid โ 10% of Basic: โน15,000 โ โน3,333 = โน11,667
Tax-exempt HRA = โน11,667 (minimum of the three). He can claim this exemption only under the OLD tax regime.
๐ฆ 4. EPF โ Your Forced Retirement Savings Engine
| Contribution | Rate | Amount (Basic โน33,333) |
|---|---|---|
| You contribute | 12% of Basic | โน4,000/month |
| Employer contributes | 12% of Basic | โน4,000/month |
| Total EPF per month | โ | โน8,000/month |
| Annual EPF corpus growth | 8.25% interest (2026) | ~โน1,07,620/year |
๐ก Your employer's EPF contribution is NOT part of your take-home โ it goes directly into your EPF account. But it IS included in your CTC. This is why โน8 LPA CTC gives you less than โน67K/month in hand.
๐ข 5. TDS Calculation โ How Your Monthly Tax Is Computed
Your employer estimates your annual tax liability based on your declared investments (Form 12BB) and deducts 1/12th as TDS every month.
