India is about to send humans to space for the first time in history. The Gaganyaan mission is ISRO's most ambitious project — and it will change India's position in the global space order. Here's everything explained simply.
What is Gaganyaan?
Gaganyaan (Sanskrit: "Sky Vehicle") is India's first crewed orbital spaceflight mission. The goal: send 3 Indian astronauts (called Vyomanauts) to a 400 km orbit for 3 days and safely return them to Earth via splashdown in the Arabian Sea.
If successful, India becomes the 4th country in the world to independently send humans to space — after the USA, Russia, and China.
Why Does This Matter So Much?
Most space missions send satellites or rovers. Human spaceflight is in a completely different league:
- It requires life support systems that keep humans alive in vacuum
- Extreme precision re-entry (if the angle is off by 1°, the capsule burns up or bounces off the atmosphere)
- Emergency escape systems that activate in milliseconds
- Psychological + physiological management for humans in microgravity
Building all this from scratch is what separates tier-1 space nations from everyone else.

The Four Astronauts (Vyomanauts)
ISRO selected four Indian Air Force pilots for Gaganyaan training:
- Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair — experienced MiG-21, SU-30 pilot, 3000+ flight hours
- Group Captain Ajit Krishnan — test pilot, flew 50+ aircraft types
- Group Captain Angad Pratap — fighter pilot, highly decorated
- Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla — will be the first Indian to go to the International Space Station (ISS) on Axiom Mission in 2025
All four underwent training at Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia and at ISRO's facilities in Bengaluru.
Only 2–3 will fly on the actual Gaganyaan mission. The final selection hasn't been publicly confirmed.
How the Spacecraft Works
Gaganyaan has three main components:
1. Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3) — The Rocket
Previously called GSLV Mk-III, LVM3 is ISRO's most powerful rocket:
- Height: 43.5 meters (14-storey building)
- Payload to Low Earth Orbit: 10,000 kg
- Two solid boosters + liquid core stage + cryogenic upper stage
- Powers the spacecraft to 400 km orbit in about 16 minutes
2. Orbital Module
The Orbital Module stays in space during the mission. It has two parts:
- Crew Module (CM): The pressurized capsule where the Vyomanauts live
- Service Module (SM): Contains propulsion, power, and life support systems
3. Crew Module (Where Humans Live)
- Shape: Blunt cone (like Apollo/Soyuz)
- Mass: ~5,800 kg
- Diameter: 3.7 meters
- Can hold 3 astronauts for up to 7 days
- Has its own atmosphere (21% oxygen, 79% nitrogen, same as Earth)
- Pressure: 1 atmosphere
- Temperature control, CO₂ removal, water management
The crew module is the most complex thing ISRO has ever built.
How Re-Entry Works
Getting back to Earth is as dangerous as going up. Here's the sequence:
- De-orbit burn: Service module fires retro-thrusters to slow down, begins descent
- Separation: Service module detaches and burns up in atmosphere
- Re-entry heating: Crew module hits atmosphere at 8 km/s, temperatures reach 1600°C
- Heat shield: Ablative heat shield absorbs the heat (chars and burns away safely)
- Drogue chutes: Two small parachutes deploy at 16 km altitude to slow down
- Main parachutes: Three large parachutes deploy at 2.5 km altitude
- Splashdown: Module lands in Arabian Sea, 500 km off Saurashtra coast
- Recovery: Indian Navy ships retrieve crew
The entire re-entry from de-orbit to splashdown takes about 30 minutes.
Vyom Mitra — ISRO's Space Robot
Before sending humans, ISRO flew Vyom Mitra — a humanoid robot designed to simulate a human astronaut:
- Can flip switches, read panels, operate equipment
- Monitors cabin environment
- Carries out experiments
- Has a face that can show expressions and speak in multiple Indian languages
Vyom Mitra is not just a stunt — it's a critical safety validation system. If the spacecraft's life support, pressure, and thermal systems can keep a robot performing properly, they can keep a human alive.

ISRO's human spaceflight program doesn't stop at Gaganyaan:

₹9,023 crore sounds like a lot. In context:

For comparison, a single launch of SpaceX's Starship costs more than India's entire Gaganyaan program. India's ISRO is legendary for doing more with dramatically less.
