1. The 400x Cosmic Coincidence

Have you ever held your thumb up to your eye to "cover" a distant skyscraper or the full Moon?

Your thumb isn't bigger than a skyscraper. It looks bigger because it is much closer to your eye.

This is nature's greatest geometry coincidence:

  • The Sun's diameter is 400 times larger than the Moon's.
  • But the Sun is also 400 times farther away from Earth than the Moon is!

Because both ratios cancel out perfectly, the Sun and Moon appear to be the exact same angular size in our sky (about 0.5 degrees across).

4. Why Don't We Have an Eclipse Every Month?

If the Moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days (a New Moon cycle), why don't we get a solar eclipse every single month?
