Every Indian with a bank account uses at least one of these four payment systems — but most people have no idea what happens behind the scenes or which one to use when. This guide breaks it all down clearly.
The Big Four Payment Systems in India
India has four major electronic payment rails:
| System | Full Form | Operated By |
|---|---|---|
| UPI | Unified Payments Interface | NPCI |
| IMPS | Immediate Payment Service | NPCI |
| NEFT | National Electronic Funds Transfer | RBI |
| RTGS | Real Time Gross Settlement | RBI |
UPI — The Revolution You Already Use
UPI is India's most used payment system with over 14 billion transactions per month in 2026. It runs on top of IMPS rails but adds a layer of simplicity through VPA (Virtual Payment Address) like yourname@okicici.
Key facts:
- Works 24×7, 365 days
- Transfer limit: ₹1 lakh per transaction (₹5 lakh for some categories)
- Charges: Zero for person-to-person transfers
- Settlement: Instantaneous (within 30 seconds)
- Works on: PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, bank apps
Use UPI when: paying at shops, splitting bills with friends, paying rent, utility bills, small business payments.
How UPI Actually Works
When you tap "Pay" in Google Pay, here's what happens in ~2 seconds:
- Your UPI app sends a payment request to NPCI
- NPCI identifies your bank (called PSP — Payment Service Provider)
- Your bank verifies your UPI PIN and debits your account
- NPCI sends instruction to recipient's bank
- Recipient's bank credits their account
- Both parties get a notification
The whole process completes in under 30 seconds, 24×7.
IMPS — UPI Without the Apps
IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) is the underlying rail that UPI runs on. You can use it directly via net banking or mobile banking to send money using someone's account number + IFSC.
Key facts:
- Works 24×7, 365 days
- Transfer limit: ₹5 lakh per transaction
- Charges: ₹2.5 to ₹25 depending on bank and amount
- Settlement: Instantaneous
- Needs: Account number + IFSC code
Use IMPS when: sending money to someone whose UPI you don't know but you have their bank details, or when making transfers above ₹1 lakh (up to ₹5 lakh).
NEFT — The Old Reliable
NEFT is RBI's batch-processing payment system. Despite being older, it remains hugely popular for regular bank-to-bank transfers.
Key facts:
- Works 24×7 (RBI moved it online in December 2019)
- Transfer limit: No upper limit (minimum ₹1)
- Charges: Free for individuals (some banks may charge small fees)
- Settlement: In batches every 30 minutes — not truly instant
- Needs: Account number + IFSC code
Use NEFT when: you're transferring medium amounts (₹5 lakh to ₹2 crore), and you don't need instant settlement. Also good for EMI payments and recurring transfers.
Why NEFT Isn't Truly Instant
NEFT settles in "batches" — this means your payment is grouped with thousands of others and processed together every 30 minutes. So if you send money at 2:31 PM, it may only arrive at 3:00 PM. This is why NEFT is not suitable when someone needs money urgently.
RTGS — For Big Money Moves
RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) is India's system for large-value transfers. Unlike NEFT, every RTGS transaction settles individually and in real time.
Key facts:
- Works 24×7 (since December 2020)
- Transfer limit: Minimum ₹2 lakh, no maximum
- Charges: Free (RBI made it free in 2019)
- Settlement: Real-time, transaction by transaction
- Needs: Account number + IFSC code
Use RTGS when: buying property, making large business payments, paying off a big loan, or any transfer above ₹2 lakh where you need certainty and speed.
Why RTGS Matters for Big Transactions
For a ₹50 lakh property purchase, you cannot use UPI (₹1 lakh limit) or IMPS (₹5 lakh limit). NEFT would work but isn't real-time. RTGS settles the entire ₹50 lakh as a single gross settlement in real time — your recipient's bank account is credited immediately after debiting yours.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | UPI | IMPS | NEFT | RTGS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Instant | Instant | 30 min batches | Instant |
| Available | 24×7 | 24×7 | 24×7 | 24×7 |
| Min Amount | ₹1 | ₹1 | ₹1 | ₹2 lakh |
| Max Amount | ₹1–5 lakh | ₹5 lakh | No limit | No limit |
| Charges | Free (P2P) | ₹2.5–₹25 | Free | Free |
| Identifier | VPA/UPI ID | A/c + IFSC | A/c + IFSC | A/c + IFSC |
| Best for | Daily use | Medium transfers | Regular transfers | Large amounts |
Quick Decision Guide
Paying ₹500 at a restaurant? → UPI
Sending ₹3,000 to a friend who doesn't have UPI? → IMPS
Paying your SIP or EMI ₹25,000? → NEFT or UPI
Transferring ₹10 lakh for a car? → RTGS
Paying ₹85 lakh for a flat? → RTGS
Common Myths Busted
Myth 1: "UPI and IMPS are the same"
Not exactly. UPI uses IMPS infrastructure but adds VPA-based addressing, QR codes, and collect requests. You can't use IMPS with just a UPI ID.
Myth 2: "NEFT is slow because it's old"
NEFT operates 24×7 since 2019 — it's not old-fashioned. It just uses batch processing, which is a design choice, not a limitation.
Myth 3: "RTGS is only for businesses"
Anyone — individuals included — can use RTGS for transfers above ₹2 lakh. Buying property as an individual? RTGS is your friend.
Myth 4: "UPI is completely free forever"
UPI P2P (person-to-person) is free. Merchant transactions (P2M) have interchange fees — but these are paid by the merchant's bank, not you.
The Future: UPI 2.0 and UPI One World
NPCI is rolling out:
- UPI Circle — delegate payments to family members with limits
- UPI One World — foreign tourists can use UPI in India with prepaid wallets
- UPI Lite X — offline payments without internet
- Credit Line on UPI — link your pre-approved credit to UPI
India's payment infrastructure is arguably the most advanced in the world. The USA still uses ACH which takes 1–2 business days. We're doing ₹14 billion transactions a month in real time.
Summary
Use UPI for everything under ₹1 lakh in daily life. Use IMPS when you need to transfer using account details without UPI. Use NEFT for regular medium-large transfers where speed isn't critical. Use RTGS for large transfers above ₹2 lakh where you need certainty and real-time settlement.
Understanding these systems doesn't just help you be a smarter user — it helps you avoid delays in critical financial moments like property purchases, loan disbursals, and emergency transfers.
